
The artist spent much of his time deciding on the correct composition for the painting. As you can see from this early photograph, nothing was left to chance, with every detail penciled in before the actual paint work began.
"I was very disciplined about the initial drawing and resisted the temptation to start painting it too soon. I wanted to make sure everything was in exactly the right place. Proper historical research has given me the confidence I needed to take on such a momentous task" says Ian.
